Hoorn was founded about 1300 and chartered in 1357, it was the capital of medieval West Friesland. Its horn-shaped harbour (for which it is named) was one of the principal ports of the Netherlands until the Zuiderzee silted up in the 18th century. The first great net for herring fishing was made in Hoorn in 1416.
It is a picturesque town on the Markermeer in North Holland, is famous for its rich maritime past from the Golden Age. Here you can enjoy historic buildings such as the Westfries Museum and the Hoofdtoren, and the atmospheric old harbor offers a glimpse of the glory days of the VOC, Dutch East India Company.
In addition to its history, Hoorn has a lively downtown with cozy cafes, restaurants and quaint boutiques. Weekly markets and events such as the Hoorn City Festival make the city inviting.
